One of the special activities of the Twenthe Guitar Festival that attracts much praise and interest is the “Guitar in the Classroom” project.
On 10 December 2019, the Rabobank Enschede-Haaksbergen Stimulation Fund decided to honor the application for ‘Guitar in the classroom’ and to grant a donation of 1,500 Euro. The check was handed over on 17 February 2020 by Mr Henk Roekevisch on behalf of the Fund to the Board of the Twents Gitaarfestival Foundation. The contribution will be spent on the purchase of six teaching guitars and the remaining amount can be spent on guitar teacher fees within the project. The remaining part of the costs for guitar teachers is financed by EuroStrings, the European partnership between 17 guitar festivals in which the Twents Gitaarfestival has been the Dutch partner for a number of years now.
In total there is now a budget for lessons at four primary schools in Enschede: OBS Park Stokhorst, CBS Anna van Buren, OBS de Esmarke and OBS Het Pathmos. Last year, ‘Guitar in the classroom’ was offered as a pilot to a few schools. Children, teachers and parents responded very enthusiastically. This year, 13 schools had applied, and by drawing lots it was ultimately determined which four were the lucky students. In order to give them sufficient attention, the lessons are given in groups of a maximum of 10 children, by good guitar teachers who have experience teaching young children. The children get a guitar at the start of the lesson and get started without learning to read music.
